5 Signs It's Time to Update Your Corrective Lens Prescription

You see so many details when you have the right corrective lens prescription! You can see individual tree leaves and read the words on the computer screen. But when your eyesight is blurry and you squint, it’s time for a visual upgrade.

At Focus Refined Eye Care in The Heights and Montrose sections of Houston, Texas, Bimal Patel, OD, and the team recommend regular eye exams with state-of-the-art equipment. You deserve to see as well as possible; the right corrective lenses can help.

Roughly 160 million Americans wear corrective lenses. Some start wearing them as children, while others don’t need them until an older age. Nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism are all common. With nearsightedness, you can’t see well at a distance. Farsightedness impacts your vision closely, and astigmatism focuses light at multiple points.

Each diagnosis is a common eyesight problem that’s easily corrected with glasses or contact lenses. Depending on your eyes, lifestyle, and preference, you might prefer wearing glasses, contact lenses, or both, depending on your activities.

When should you update your corrective lenses?

An annual eye exam helps keep your eyes healthy. We check your medical history, discuss symptoms, and complete your eye exam. You can expect several assessments, such as reading the wall chart and using optical coherence tomography (OCT) to assess your eye health.

If you have any of the following symptoms, it’s time to make an appointment.

  • Squinting
  • Blurred vision
  • Trouble focusing on a screen
  • Frequent headaches
  • Seeing halos around lights

Sometimes, it’s obvious that your eyes have shifted, and you don’t see as well as you once did. Other times, your eyes might change, and you might not realize it. Your eyes might change due to increased computer time or aging eyes. It’s normal for your eyesight to change throughout your life.

For example, if you’re past forty years old, a condition called presbyopia is common. As your eye ages, your eye lenses become less flexible, which makes it tougher to adjust to the light entering your eye. As a result, you might find yourself squinting, taking your glasses to read close up, or general eyestrain.

Presbyopia is easy to correct with corrective lenses.
